What do we mean by Preservation/Conservation?
Basically there are 3 types:

  1.  Documentary.  Restoring a building it its original state, using the same materials and construction methods.  Such a building is usually maintained as a museum.  Example: Old California Adobes.

  2. Representative:  Bringing some part of our colorful past into focus for the present generation by creating a s setting typical of a bygone time.  Example:  Wawona Pioneer History Center in Yosemite National Park.

  3. Adaptive Reuse.  Example:  a bank remodeled into a restaurant.  This recycling of existing buildings is growing increasingly important:
    • It revitalizes our inner cities
    • it is cheaper than tearing down and rebuilding from scratch
    • it is labor intensive and therefore creates jobs
    • it keeps buildings on the tax rolls.
